Where is The Nub and What is it?
1. The Nub is located in Blue Hill Falls - adjacent to Conary Cove and The Mill Pond Dam. It is (misspelled on nautical charts as Canary Cove). It can be readily found by using Google Maps. The Nub consists of two small islands and an underwater ledge that bounds the sound side of Conary Cove.
Part of what is being incorrectly called "The Nub" is a piece of land adjacent to the Mill Pond Dam which leads to Mill Island and to the Blue Hill Falls Bridge. That piece of land had at one time supported four different buildings. Two structures (house and "shed") are depicted in photos #1 & #5 and another structure (Dana's) in photo #2. In photo #7, Three structures can be identified, just to the left of the Tide Mill located on the Bay side of the dam (as photographed in the mid-1800s). The Islands and the mainland element can be seen in the photo #3 (from Google Maps) and in #4 (Drone photo).
2. The Nub is a piece of land (or islands) that "sticks out."
In this case it consists of the two tree'd islands - one of which can be readily accessed at low tide and the other at very low tides, as well as a ledge that is not attached and often submerged. The term is common and a similar term "Hub" can be found in many places on the Bay, referring to a piece of land that you can circle by boat - as a hub on a wheel. "A nub is a little piece of something, especially one that sticks out. The raised rubber buttons on your TV remote control are nubs."
